A love relationship in two acts

Iambic is thrilled to be associated with the Players Collective in  presenting this unusual dramatisation.

A two women play about the relationship, influences and literary styles of aristocrat Vita Sackville-West and Bloomsbury-set member & novelist, Virginia Woolf. As love stories go, this tale of Vita and Virginia was one of the most passionate in the literary world and spanned almost two decades; they nurtured their physical and literary love affair through their intimate correspondence.

The script has been artfully created by actress and playwright Eileen Atkins: she has compiled extracts from their letters and diaries, and presents a unique portrait of Vita and Virginia in dialogue.

This particular version of Vita and Virginia was originally produced by The Players Collective in Lewes in September 2011, and played to critical acclaim.

What happens when the wife goes to meet her husband’s lover?

The Lover, The Wife

A fun, fast moving play, translated from the French, by Colin David Reese and brought to Iambic from Paris.

Modern comedy based on a common theme: two women involved with the same man. Play views the situation entirely from the woman’s point of view and follows their different stories. The women would never have met except for Christine’s desire to find out who her husband’s mistress is.

A final and luscious twist ensues and the final scene brings the women together in ways they never thought possible.

A certainty for an entertaining evening and a taster of what our international program has lined up for the Fringe 2012.

As the play progresses, we learn more about Lydia’s and Christine’s backgrounds and they discover that deep-seated ideas can be challenged by understanding another person.

Fridays When It Rains

A chilling Ghost Story written by Nick Warburton

Following its huge previous success at Iambic of this psychological drama, adapted by Vicki Carpenter for our stage, we bring you Fridays when it Rains for the Halloween weekend!

Explores several elements, power of suggestion…class prejudice…dangers of unrequited love.

A story within a story, this thrilling original gem, set in the age of steam and a compartment carriage, will keep the audience riveted and fascinated.

When the train reaches its final destination, the chilling twist is revealed.

A perfect play for the Halloween weekend, and our set of the railway carriage is something we are very proud of!

Chillingly performed by Vicki Carpenter and Robin Saika, directed by Vicki Carpenter and produced by Emma D’Arcy, come and enjoy a glass of mulled wine in our bar before the show.

The Poison Maker

The Poison Maker at Iambic Arts Theatre, Brighton

There is something comforting about plays set at the turn of the Century..the predictability of the set, the delicious thrill of high-neck blouses, the suggestive shrieking of violins.

But there is nothing comfortable about the late John Symonds and our own Vicki Carpenter‘s artful script, the unusual focus of the play’s subject matter, is incest and the Oedipus complex.

Young Felix lives alone with his mother in a menage that stops only slightly short of incestuous; Pansy is quite happy to have her son take nude photos of
her to develop his artistic side!

This anarchic comedy of the Romantic (rather than romantic) persuasion carries echoes of Cocteau and Poe and creates a quite wonderful picture of a perverse society in London in the 1900s.

Directed by actress and playwright Vicki Carpenter, this unique production is something we have been wanting to put on at Iambic Arts for sometime.

Come and be part of our final play for 2011.

This will be a production you will remember for some time!

BloodMining by Laura Wilkinson

Laura Wilkinson is a Brighton-based author whose stories have been widely praised, both online and in print. She was a founding member of the Virago-supported web initiative, Hags Harlots Heroines, celebrating women’s history.

Her début novel, BloodMining, is published by Bridge House, the indie press behind last year’s fundraising anthology, 100 Stories for Haiti.

Laura’s book launch will be a relaxed evening, with her reading extracts from her new novel.

Daniel Aherne’s new adaptation of Franz Kafka’s classic novel is based on Susanne Lück’s translation, this production will be its first staging. Translation material used with kind permission of Vitalis Verlag.

Founded in December 2009 by Sascha Cooper and Daniel Aherne, Crimson Horse Theatre brings to the stage performances that are unique – from new writing and self devised pieces to classical texts that haven’t been performed in a long time.

Josef K. awakens one morning to find himself under arrest for unidentified crimes. K. then embarks on a journey to understand a mysterious law, administered by strange, dark courts held in dust-laden attics.

In his quest K. enlists the help of beautiful women and an unfathomable lawyer named Dr Huld to prepare his case.

But will K. ever unravel the complex law hunting him…?

The Books of Brian Barritt

“If you finish a novel and you’ve only got one copy,

never leave it in a briefcase with a gold bar and a revolver, because it will get stolen.”

Such was the hard-earned literary wisdom of Brian Barritt, the Beatnik, Krautrocker and adventurer who died this year aged 76. Barritt was a writer in the Outsider Artist tradition who left behind a literary legacy of five bizarre, hilarious and uncompromising books. Wildly different, they range from autobiographical prison writing to psychedelic archaeology and pornographic science fiction, and have been praised by the likes of William Burroughs, Alex Trocchi and Timothy Leary.

Lusty, absurd and profoundly insightful – often in the same sentence – Barritt’s wild prose and extraordinary imagery are all we have now of his unique mind.  How well do these obscure texts, at times scrappy and barely publishable, at others sublime and visionary, capture his spirit and his wilful insanity?

In this talk John Higgs, author of ‘I Have America Surrounded: The Life of Timothy Leary’, makes the first stab at assessing Barritt’s literary legacy.  He will tell the stories behind each book, frequently as extraordinary as the books themselves, together with readings from each title and copious anecdotes from Barritt’s life.

Paul Diello and Friends

What a way to close our Fringe on Bank Holiday Monday!

Paul’s been going from strength to strength; he has recently won best solo artist at the Brighton Music Awards, a huge coo, as well as being nominated for best video for his ‘Crime Scene’ video.

For those who are new to his work, he is the young voice to be reckoned with; his stage performance is engaging throughout; his ability to juxtapose that haunting ‘Antony & the Johnsons-esque’ vocal with a performance akin to Eddie izzard put him in the league of ‘ a one-off’.

Paul Diello will put us on a special show for the end of the Fringe, he’s promised me that!

Watch this space for the announcement about which of the many musical friends he will introduce as guests to his stage. (I’m whispering Iris & the Wolves this time…and she and Paul know why..so my fingers still crossed.)
